چکیده
conclusions despite the fact that abnormalities in p53 and p27kip1 may be involved in the development of oscc, their clinical significance in the studied population seems limited. further investigation on the combined p53/p27kip1 expression may be helpful in predicting the biologic behavior of this tumor. results p53 and p27kip1 expression were found in 28.57% (8 positive versus 20 negative) and 67.85% (19 positive versus 9 negative) of oscc cases, respectively. there was no significant association between these two proteins (p = 0.371), and neither of them showed a significant relationship with the studied clinicopathologic variables (p > 0.05). in survival analysis, only histopathologic differentiation (17 low and moderate, 11 poor) demonstrated a significant correlation with overall survival (p = 0.048). background alterations in p53 and p27kip1 have been documented as important events in the carcinogenesis of various cancers, but their prognostic role in oral squamous cell carcinoma (oscc) remains controversial. objectives the present investigation aimed to evaluate the clinicopathologic and prognostic significance of p53 and p27kip1 expression in a group of iranian patients with oscc. patients and methods in this analytical cross-sectional study, medical records of patients with primary oscc, diagnosed from 1994 to 2004 were reviewed and 28 subjects were selected based on the inclusion/exclusion criteria. immunohistochemical staining using monoclonal antibodies against p53 and p27kip1 was performed on representative archival paraffin blocks. demographic data along with information on p53 and p27kip1 expression, recurrence, and tumor grade was statistically analyzed using the fischer exact test. prognostic factors for overall survival were determined by cox regression analysis (p < 0.05).

According to statistical data, head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSSCs), on the scale of incidence of all human tumors, are on the 6th position, wheras 50% of these tumors are located in oral region. Despite develop ment in the last decades in the prevention and efficiant surgical resections, as well as adequate radio and chemo therapy, fiveyear survival rate still remains the same (a...
متن کاملCorrelation of EGFR Expression with Survival Rate in Patients with Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Background and Aim: This study aimed to indicate the role of epidermal growth factor (EGF) in proliferation and growth of epithelial tissue and to determine the correlation be-tween the frequency of expression of EGF receptor (EGFR) by means of immunohistochemistry with survival rate in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Materials and Methods: Thirty-eight cases of OSCC diagnosed by hemato...
متن کاملComparison of Expression of p53 and bcl-2 Markers in Oral Lichen Planus and Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Background and Aim: It has been suggested that oral lichen planus (OLP) can be a potential premalignant lesion. Reports are also available on the role of bcl-2 and p53 proteins in malignant transformation of OLP into oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Due to controversies in these reports, the present study aimed to compare the expression of p53 and bcl-2 markers in OLP and OSCC. Materials a...
متن کاملTELOMERASEACTIVITYIN IRANIAN PATIENTS WITH ESOPHAGEAL SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA
Telomerase activation is one of the main pathways to immortalize cancer cells. In many kinds of cancer cells, this special reverse transcriptase stabilizes and elongates telomeres and prevents telomere erosion that naturally occurs in every cell division. Esophageal cancer is the fifth most frequent cause of cancer death worldwide, and is highly associated with alcohol, smoking, cultural ha...
متن کاملSerum Level of Interleukin-6 in Patients with Oral Tongue Squamous cell Carcinoma
Introduction: The clinical outcome of patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) located in the head and neck has remained poor despite ongoing advances in diagnosis and management. Interleukin-6(IL-6) is a multi-functional cytokine that plays an important role in the process of cell differentiation and is increased in several malignancies. The aim of this study was to investigate the serum le...
